It is difficult to imagine modern life without modern chemistry. Chemistry is a science which forms a bridge to biology, pharmacy and helps better understand medicine. Without chemical engineering there could be no rational production of numerous products, which we normally take for granted.

Chemistry studies and research in Slovenia have long tradition. The beginnings go as far as the seventeenth century, and regular university chemistry studies started in 1919 when the University of Ljubljana was established. It is interesting to note that the first doctoral degree was awarded in chemistry to Ms. Anka Mayer in 1920.

Since 1994, chemistry studies have been organised within the framework of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology with the following study programmes: four-year undergraduate programmes in Chemistry, Chemical Education, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering, all leading to university diploma, and three-year university professional programmes in Safety at Work and Fire Safety and Chemistry Technology under which students can specialise in Chemistry technology, Applied chemistry and Leather Technology.

The faculty also runs postgraduate programmes in the following areas: Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Physical chemistry, and Biochemistry. The Department of Chemical Technology offers programmes in Chemical technology and Materials Science which offers specialisation in inorganic materials and polymer science. The third programme is Chemical engineering. Biochemistry can be studied under the Biomedicine programme in which our Faculty has a share. The Faculty also participates in the postgraduate programme of Environmental protection run by the University, and in the Materials programme offered by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering.

Like other University members, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology has adopted the European Credit Transfer System. This allows for the transfer of students between the European universities with which the Faculty has made bilateral agreements. In order to harmonise the programmes with the Bologna Agreement new programmes are being designed for the study of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering. The old three-year professional programme in Safety at Work and Fire Safety has already been changed into university programme and is now in the process of approval.

The Faculty employs 45 university teachers (full professors, associate professors and assistant professors), 50 teaching assistants and over 25 technicians. Our special care is paid to high quality research which is a foundation of modern university education. The Faculty has achieved international reputation in both, research and pedagogic work.
